KNVWS 't Gooi

The Royal Netherlands Association for Meteorology & Astronomy, 't Gooi Chapter ( in Dutch: De Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereniging voor Weer- en Sterrenkunde or KNVWS) is a club for everyone interested in meteorology or astronomy, with the accent on astronomy. Most activities are in Dutch, but we do offer some in English.

Star parties

Star Parties: next Star Party October 29th & 30th

Several evenings per year, in the period October through March, we organize free, public star parties in a park near Huizen, NH, centrally located in the 't Gooi area & about 30 minutes from Amsterdam or Utrecht. Depending on the time of year, we can view planets, galaxies, star clusters, nebulae and the Moon. (read more...)

Lectures

The KNVWS 't Gooi organizes approximately 8 lectures per year in the period September through April. The lectures are open to the public & are held in the ATC high school in Hilversum on Thursday evenings, 20:00. They are generally in the Dutch language. The next lecture is on September 16th. WPS

The Workgroup Practical Astronomy (Werkgroep Praktische Sterrenkunde or WPS in Dutch) is responsible for organizing the star parties and other activities for the public. We also spend time exchanging ideas and information, helping each other with new equipment or even doing some observing. Everyone is welcome! (read more...)

Courses & presentations for schools & clubs

Our regular offering of courses and presentations is in Dutch. However, we are fortunate to have several people proficient in English, including one native speaker who is delighted to visit schools or give presentations to groups in English. She is also the NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador for the Benelux. (read more...)

Our members specialize in various aspects of both theoretical and practical astronomy and meteorology. Some pages, like Ruud Zappeij's own observatory, are in Dutch. but others, including Günther Können's articles on atmospheric phenomena,  and astrophotography by Lynn van Rooijen are also in English.

Star charts

In the course of our orbit around the Sun, the Earth's night side looks out at different sections of our Galaxy and the Universe. To help you find the way in different seasons, we have printable star charts & interactive star charts for our Netherlands location at 52N, but also suitable for the UK, Belgium, Northern Germany & Denmark.
